The Observatory at Alta Lakes

Are you ready to experience The Observatory?

Welcome to The Observatory!  The Observatory is a private and most certainly unique backcountry cabin located 13 miles from Telluride, Colorado.  It is one of only a few homes in the United States at 11,000+ feet!  The Observatory is nestled underneath the 13,000-foot Palmyra and Silver Peaks of the San Juan Mountains and is adjacent to the Telluride ski area.

The Observatory is a glimpse into the culture of Telluride.  Locals built The Observatory over a three-year period in the 1970s (after they sketched it out on a napkin at the Sheridan Bar).  Since then, it has developed into an icon for locals and visitors alike.  It picked up the nickname “The Observatory” at some point along the way because the view is downright breathtaking!  Once you see the sky on a clear night you will get it.  You will understand.  You will have experienced The Observatory.

The Observatory is remote.  In the summer, after all the snow has melted, you can access The Observatory on a 5-mile dirt road (a 2 wheel drive vehicle is fine) with some of the most incredible scenery on the planet!  You can hike, bike or drive – just be sure to enjoy the view along the way! In the fall, winter and spring, getting to The Observatory is most definitely part of the adventure! You can access The Observatory on the snow-covered road via snowmobile. You can ski in from a nearby backcountry gate or cross country ski or snowshoe right to the front door. Custom-guided backcountry trips are available via our adventure partners...summer and winter excursions with The Observatory as basecamp is a unique and unforgettable experience.

Come experience what the locals have known for years!  The Observatory is available for individual, group, private dinners, weddings and other special event rentals.
